As holiday season is approaching, we take a look at how to ask for holiday, how to give it (as an employer)
The facts:
You/your employees are legally entitled to 5.6 weeks paid holiday per year; this means at least 28 days must be paid for someone who works 5 days per week.
How do you work it out for part-time workers?
Take the number of days worked per week and multiply by 5.6. This will give you the number of days allowed. The Gov.uk website has a handy calculator to make an accurate calculation.
If you’re an employee asking for holiday, do try to give your employer as much notice in advance as possible. You should ask at least twice the amount of time beforehand that you want to take off. Your contract may say different however and you should check the dates for the holiday year.
As an employer, you have the right to refuse a holiday request if it will leave you short staffed, or for another legitimate business reason. However, do bear in mind that it may affect your relationship with the employee. It’s also a good idea to encourage your employee to use their holiday if they have not had a break.
Taking time off is beneficial for everyone, employees can rest and return to work often happier and more productive.
